Wax Worm Tacos

Posted by Kirk
I was trying to look up some facts this week at work on how much land it takes to grow various food sources. I do a class on the difference between primary consumers and secondary consumers. I wanted to find some good sources of information on how many acres of land it takes to make a hamburger versus, say, a soy burger or salad. These number seem pretty hard to come by as there are a lot of variables to take into consideration.

What I did come across was this article from PopSci stating that humanity needs to start farming bugs for food. Interesting idea. I have kids eat dry roasted crickets in my survival summer camp. We dip them in chocolate and the kids gobble them down. One or two kids won't eat them. (I would have been that kid.) They really aren't too bad though I have to admit, there is a bit of a yuck factor. I'll take a cookie any day. I'm sure some ground crickets would add protein to the cookies though and that would be great! There are probably bugs in my cookies anyhow.

I came across this clip below by reading the comments on the article. Most of the comments are barely coherent rants from meat eaters who seemed to miss the point of the article but this video is a gem. Daniella Martin, from Girl Meets Bug, shows us how to cook up wax worm tacos. Probably wouldn't fly at my house but cool none the less. Enjoy.
